Engagement Activities for Lorain's MTHM 171 College Algebra Course

Hi, folks. You’ll notice a “New" item on our home page - 15 activities developed for a typical College Algebra class created by Jeff Zeager (Lorain CCC) and his colleage Heather Bubnick. The development of these supplements to our third edition textbook was funded by the Lorain County Community College Foundation through their 2014 - 2015 Campus Grant Program. Feel free to download and use them in your courses!

End of year tidings...

Thank you all once again for using our book to help your students afford college. You folks are real heroes: you took our quirky book (Sasquatch problems and all!) and somehow made it work for your students. While Jeff and I continue to work on revising the text, and are committed to do so, our careers have suffered a bit of "mission sprawl" in recent years. We're both heavily involved in reforming our state level transfer processes and have been recruited into increasingly demanding leadership positions on our home campuses. This leaves us about 6-8 weeks during the summer as the only time we have to dedicate to the book. Realistically, Episode IV won't be ready Fall 2014 as we had once hoped. We'll shoot for 2015 (which coincides with the release of Star Wars Episode VII.) Until then, thank you all once again for your support!

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our survey! In addition to our own two schools, we learned that 26 institutions across the US (and some abroad!) have taken our materials, put in their own hard work, and made it into something for their students to use! We've helped roughly 7500 students save a collective $780,000! (If the stats from our own schools are included, those numbers soar to roughly 13,000 students and $1.2 million!) Than you all again for your support!

Hi, folks! Chapter 0: Prerequisites is now available as a standalone download. It is a *targeted* review of Basic and Intermediate Algebra topics. You can get it by clicking here or on our homepage. Jeff and I plan to continue to revise the book this coming year and have Edition IV ready for Fall 2014.

Midsummer Update!

As usual, the summer is flying by, but Jeffrey and I continue to work on the book as our schedules permit. (Our summers have not been as free as we had first hoped!) Chapter 0 is coming along, and, if nothing else, an edited narrative will be available for Fall 2013. (The exercise sets will be coming along afterwards.) Chapter 0 is a 10 section targeted review of essential developmental skills - everything from arithmetic through radicals. In other news, we've learned folks from Scottsdale CC and Phoenix College have created a wonderful, full-featured open online course based on our book. It can be found at: https://www.myopenmath.com/course/course.php?cid=921 You'll need to register at myopenmath to see it, however. (Student registration is instantaneous; faculty registration requires a bit more - but it's all free!) Also, William Pierpoint (California State Univeristy, Channel Islands) has graciously donated his materials. Check the "Ancillaries" page for a summary sheet and some very nice powerpoints (both in .pdf and .ppt format) - including a very nice extension of the material in 9.2 to car and student loans. There more exciting things "in the works" and we just can't thank you folks enough for spending your time to help us make quality education affordable!

Hi, folks!

We've uploaded our corrected 3rd editions to Lulu.com and are available by direct like from the "Our Books" page above. If you're just starting using our textbooks, we recommend you start with these! Of you're still using our (uncorrected) 3rd editions, we've generated a list of Errata, also available from the "Our Books" page above.

Corrected 3rd Editions Now Available!

Thanks to many loyal readers, Jeffrey's not only compiled a list of errata, but he's also re-compiled the books to make "corrected" 3rd Editions. In addition to fixing some typos, there are a few more exercises added in Section 3.3 (#'s 35-44 are new) and in Section 10.7 (#'s 59-68 are new.) (These were exercises that Carl incorporated into the "Scaffold to the Stars" version last year.) We will be posting links to printed copies of the corrected versions on Lulu in the near future.
